LEGO Mars mission
Daily 27 September to 12 October
10am - 5pm
The LEGO Mars Mission mining specialists have landed on the red planet in search of a new form of energy. While working in Mars' hostile and dangerous environment, the mining crew realise they are not alone in their quest. Join your child in the Russell Room (children must be supervised by an adult) to build and explore with LEGO Mars Mission.

Vacation daycare

Daycare groups can book 1-hour sessions for up to 40 people at 1pm on select days. Sessions consist of screenings in the 3D theatre and discovering the universe through our telescopes.

Mid autumn Moon festival
Sunday 14 September 2008
6pm - 8pm
Come and listen to the intriguing story of the woman in the Moon, Chang'er which is celebrated every year on the 15th day of the 8th Lunar month in the Chinese calendar. A wonderful night of traditional Moon cakes, Chinese music from the Gu Zheng and telescope viewing. If you’re very lucky you may even see the Rabbit's reflection in a small pool of water.

Make an alien
Tuesday 30 September, Thursday 2, Wednesday 8 and Friday 10 October
10am - 5pm
What might an alien from another world look like? Would it have one eye or ten? A tail? Three heads? Drop in to the Discovery Room to build an alien of your own design out of recycled materials. Bring a camera to take a picture of your creature in front of our spacey backdrops. Includes a 3-D theatre & telescope tour ticket.

Pizza nights

Join us at the start of daylight saving time for an intimate evening of pizza, Moon, Venus, Jupiter, & liquid nitrogen. Enjoy a slice or two of pizza, before experiencing what happens when nitrogen is cooled to -196°C — you may even get to taste our own space ice cream for dessert.

Australian zodiac
Saturday 4 October

The Zodiac or 'path of the animals is the line followed by the Sun, Moon, and planets against the background sky. Not one uniquely Australian animal has had a spot in the Zodiac — until now! Come face to face with real animals thanks to Taronga Zoo's Zoomobile. Meet and learn about these animals, then make your own Aussie animal star maps to take home. Storytelling in our planetarium, and more. Celebrate the animals, stories, and stars above the oldest land on the planet!

Hot & cold science
Saturday 4 October
2pm and 3pm
Explore the vast differences in temperature in our solar system by experiencing what happens when the most abundant gas in our atmosphere, Nitrogen, is cooled to -196°C. Watch as a bunch of inflated balloons seem to disappear into a bottomless pit the size of a cup. See a squash ball bounce one minute and then break like glass after being exposed to this freezing liquid. You will even get to taste our own space ice cream. Then see the scorching surface of the Sun through our special telescopes and use sunlight to read time with your own sundial to take home and make.

Focus on physics — Einstein for years 11 & 12
Wednesday 22 October or Wednesday 19 November
6pm - 8pm
Instructor: Dr Paul Payne
It's been over 100 years since Einstein released his special Theory of Relativity. Although a century old, this theory is our best description of the way space and time work together. Dr Paul Payne will demonstrate the concepts through entertaining multimedia animations and demonstrations suitable for all those interested, especially years 11/12 Physics. The evening ends with a viewing of stars and Jupiter (if weather permits) and light refreshment.
